“Sure.” She nods, looking away as he passes her five dollars in grubby, worn-edged coins.

He walks away slowly.

Jo sighs when he is gone. Brooke puts her hand over Jo's; concern and care in every line of her body.

“Thanks.”

“Don't mention it.” Brooke replies.

They have a moment of peace before the next customers come up; a small group of children a little older than ten.

“Ice cream! Ice cream.” Jo groans in mock-weariness. Brooke grins at the children.

“Alright, alright.” Jo grumbles. “Whaddya want?”

While she is busy finding the different things, Brooke is distracted by a knock on the side-door of the truck. She turns to see a small, dark-haired girl standing there.

“Yes?”

“Auntie Brea?” The girl's wide dark eyes are round, luminous. Hesitant.

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure...”

The girl beckons to Brooke to bend down so she can whisper in her ear. Brooke takes the three steps out of the truck, goes round the back, bends to let the girl whisper her information to her.

“I'm pregnant.”

The flatness of the statement and the resignation woven into it move Brooke instantly.

“You are?”
